Conspiracy Theories of the 1970s

Claims that clinics, regulators, or pharmaceutical companies suppress alternative cancer cures.

The CIA and West German BND covertly co-owned Swiss cipher-machine manufacturer Crypto AG from 1970, selling rigged encryption hardware to approximately 120 governments and militaries worldwide. For decades the agencies read the encrypted traffic of foreign governments while those governments believed their communications were secure. A joint WaPo/ZDF/SRF investigation published 11 February 2020 — drawing on a classified internal CIA history called the Minerva Files — confirmed the operation. The BND exited in 1993 citing compromise risk; the CIA continued as sole owner until 2018. The operation is assessed as confirmed by primary documentation.

The US military's use of Agent Orange herbicide in Vietnam (1961-1971) and the decades-long effort by the VA and chemical manufacturers to deny connections to veteran illnesses — cancers, type 2 diabetes, Parkinson's, peripheral neuropathy.

On 24 November 1971, a man using the alias "Dan Cooper" hijacked Northwest Orient Flight 305, extorted $200,000 in ransom, and parachuted from the aircraft over the Washington-Oregon wilderness, never to be identified. The FBI investigated more than 1,000 suspects over 45 years before formally suspending the investigation in 2016. In 2011, a citizen-science analysis of a partial ransom-bill find and particles on Cooper's abandoned tie produced new leads that also proved inconclusive.

The Nixon administration orchestrated the June 1972 break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate complex, then engaged in a systematic cover-up involving hush money, witness tampering, and abuse of federal agencies. Led to the only presidential resignation in US history.

On 11 September 1973, a military junta led by General Augusto Pinochet overthrew the democratically elected government of Salvador Allende in Chile. Allende died in La Moneda palace during the coup. Declassified NSA and CIA documents released between 1999 and 2000 confirm that the Nixon administration, directed by National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger and the 40 Committee, ran two parallel covert-action tracks — Track I and Track II — to prevent Allende from taking power and subsequently to destabilise his government. ITT Corporation collaborated with the CIA. The order to "make the economy scream" is documented on tape. Approximately 3,200 people were killed or forcibly disappeared under Pinochet between 1973 and 1990.

On September 11, 1973, Chilean President Salvador Allende died as military forces bombed the presidential palace and seized power, installing General Augusto Pinochet. Declassified CIA, State Department, and Nixon White House records confirm that the United States actively sought to destabilise Allende's government through covert operations (Track I and Track II), economic pressure, and military contacts. The CIA's own documents describe authorisation from President Nixon and National Security Adviser Henry Kissinger. The verdict is confirmed: US covert involvement is a documented historical fact, not speculation.

On the night of 11 October 1973, shipyard workers Charles Hickson (42) and Calvin Parker (19) claimed they were abducted from the banks of the Pascagoula River in Mississippi by three robotic beings who transported them aboard an oval craft for a medical examination. Sheriff James Caldwell, after interviewing the men, left them alone in a room with a hidden recorder — neither man broke their story when unobserved. Hickson subsequently passed a polygraph. No physical evidence of the encounter has been produced. The case remains one of the most-cited close-encounter reports but has no corroborating physical evidence.

Project Azorian was a classified CIA operation in which the purpose-built ship Hughes Glomar Explorer raised portions of the sunken Soviet ballistic-missile submarine K-129 from a depth of approximately 16,500 feet in the Pacific Ocean in 1974. The project used a Howard Hughes cover story — ostensibly a deep-sea mining vessel — to conceal the operation. It was partially declassified in 2010. The operation is fully confirmed and represents one of the most technically ambitious covert operations in history.

Operation Condor was a coordinated programme of political repression and cross-border assassination carried out by the intelligence services of six South American military regimes — Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay — beginning in 1975. The programme was facilitated by the United States CIA and State Department. Its existence was long denied by participating governments but was confirmed by the 1992 discovery of the "Archives of Terror" in Paraguay (~700,000 documents), declassified US State Department cables, and court proceedings including the 1998 arrest of Augusto Pinochet in London. Estimated deaths: 60,000. The 1976 car bomb assassination of former Chilean foreign minister Orlando Letelier and Ronni Moffitt in Washington DC was an FBI-documented Condor operation on US soil.

Teamsters president Jimmy Hoffa vanished on 30 July 1975 from the Machus Red Fox restaurant parking lot in Bloomfield Township, Michigan. He had arranged to meet Anthony Provenzano and Anthony Giacalone, both Mafia figures with grievances against him. The FBI declared him legally dead in 1982. Despite multiple confessions, tips, and excavations over five decades, no remains have ever been found. The broad outlines of Mob involvement are supported by testimony and circumstantial evidence; the precise disposal method remains unresolved.

On 5 November 1975, 22-year-old Travis Walton claimed he was struck by a beam of light from a UFO and taken aboard a craft while six logging crew members watched near Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest, Arizona. Walton was missing for five days. The crew initially became suspects in his disappearance. When Walton reappeared, he described an encounter with humanoid beings aboard the craft. Multiple polygraph tests were administered to crew members and Walton over subsequent years, with contested and contradictory results. The case was dramatised in the 1993 film Fire in the Sky. No physical evidence has been produced.

James 'Whitey' Bulger, leader of the Winter Hill Gang in South Boston, was recruited as an FBI Top Echelon Informant by Special Agent John Connolly in September 1975. Over the following two decades Bulger and associate Stephen Flemmi used their FBI-protected status to commit 19 or more murders — including killings of potential witnesses and rival informants — while Connolly tipped Bulger off to investigations and rival informants. Connolly was convicted in 2002 (racketeering) and 2008 (second-degree murder, Florida). Bulger fled in December 1994 after a tip-off, was captured in Santa Monica in June 2011, convicted in August 2013, and was killed in a West Virginia federal prison in October 2018.

On 7 December 1975, Indonesia invaded East Timor — one day after President Ford and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger met with Suharto in Jakarta and, according to a declassified US Embassy telegram, explicitly did not object to Indonesian military action. Operation Komodo was Indonesia's covert destabilisation campaign preceding the invasion. Between 1975 and 1999, an estimated 100,000 to 180,000 Timorese died from violence, famine, and disease directly attributable to the occupation (CAVR 'Chega!' report, 2005). The 1991 Santa Cruz Massacre, filmed by journalist Max Stahl, brought international attention. Indonesia withdrew following a UN-supervised independence referendum in 1999. Australian governments' knowledge and complicity during the Whitlam era is separately documented.

On March 24, 1976, a military junta seized power in Argentina, deposing President Isabel Perón. Over the following seven years — until the junta's collapse in December 1983 following the Falklands War — an estimated 30,000 people were forcibly disappeared: abducted, tortured, and killed by state security forces operating through a network of clandestine detention centres including the Navy Mechanics School (ESMA). The disappeared included trade unionists, students, journalists, priests, lawyers, and perceived political opponents. Argentina also participated in Operation Condor — a coordinated programme of transnational political repression among South American military regimes (Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, Brazil, Bolivia) with documented US support. The scale of the crimes is confirmed by the 1985 trial of the military juntas, the CONADEP truth commission report *Nunca Más*, and extensive declassified US documentation. Denialist claims that minimise the scale or attribute disappearances to armed conflict rather than state terror are directly contradicted by the documented record.

The theory that NASA faked the Apollo moon landings between 1969 and 1972, filming them on a secret movie set rather than actually sending astronauts to the lunar surface.

In 1976 NASA's Viking 1 orbiter photographed a mesa in the Cydonia region of Mars that, under low resolution and slanting sunlight, resembled a humanoid face. Fringe researchers argued it was an artificial monument built by a lost Martian civilization and that NASA covered up the truth, but higher-resolution imaging over the following decades resolved it into an ordinary eroded hill.

Robert Temple's 1976 book The Sirius Mystery claimed the Dogon people of Mali held impossible ancient knowledge of Sirius B, an invisible white-dwarf companion star with a ~50-year orbit, taught to them by amphibious extraterrestrials called the Nommo. The claim rests on 1930s-40s ethnography by Marcel Griaule and Germaine Dieterlen. But a 1991 field restudy by anthropologist Walter van Beek found Dogon informants did not actually hold the Sirius-B lore Griaule reported, Sirius B's existence and orbital period were already well known to Western science before Griaule arrived, and Carl Sagan and others argue the knowledge, if genuine, reached the Dogon through ordinary human contact.

The documented, decades-long effort by fossil-fuel companies (ExxonMobil, Shell, Koch Industries) and associated think tanks to deliberately manufacture doubt about climate science — well-documented through internal documents, industry memos, and legal discovery.

Since Elvis Presley's death on August 16, 1977, at Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee, a persistent conspiracy theory has held that the King of Rock and Roll faked his own death and has been living in secret ever since. Proponents point to alleged funeral irregularities, an anagram on his grave marker, reported sightings, and financial incentives for the Presley estate. Every specific claim has been addressed by official records, forensic findings, and testimony from family members who witnessed his death and burial.

Pope Albino Luciani (John Paul I) died on 28 September 1978, after a 33-day pontificate — the shortest in modern history. Sister Vincenza Taffarel found him unresponsive in bed at 5 a.m. The Vatican announced death by heart attack 'while reading Imitation of Christ'. No autopsy was performed, as Vatican law prohibits papal autopsies. David Yallop's 'In God's Name' (1984) alleged poisoning orchestrated by the P2 Masonic lodge and Vatican Bank insiders — Archbishop Paul Marcinkus, banker Roberto Calvi, and Licio Gelli — who feared Luciani's planned financial reforms. John Cornwell's counter-investigation 'A Thief in the Night' (1989), commissioned by the Vatican, found no evidence of murder and attributed death to an undiagnosed pulmonary embolism.

On 18 November 1978, 918 people died at the Peoples Temple agricultural commune in Jonestown, Guyana. Jim Jones ordered mass ingestion of cyanide-laced punch; Congressman Leo Ryan and four others were murdered at the nearby airstrip. The CIA-mind-control claim — that Jones was a programmed intelligence asset executing an MKULTRA operation — is unsupported. The coerced-mass-suicide-and-murder framing is well-evidenced: autopsies showed lethal injections, especially in children, corroborating survivor accounts of force.

Christian Democrat President Aldo Moro was abducted on Via Fani, Rome, on 16 March 1978 — the morning of the swearing-in of his 'compromesso storico' coalition with the PCI. A five-member Brigate Rosse team led by Mario Moretti killed Moro's five escort officers in the ambush. Moro was held 55 days; nine letters from captivity were sent to his family and the Italian government. The State refused all negotiation. His body was found in the trunk of a Renault 4 on Via Caetani on 9 May 1978. Moretti received a life sentence in 1983; Prospero Gallinari and Anna Laura Braghetti were also convicted. Parliamentary commissions (1979–83, and a special commission in 2014) identified anomalies in the original investigation, with allegations of overlap with the NATO stay-behind network Gladio and a broader 'strategy of tension'.

The Dulce Base legend claims a multi-level, jointly-operated human-alien facility hides beneath Archuleta Mesa near Dulce, New Mexico, complete with genetic experiments, a 'Nightmare Hall,' and a 1979 firefight between aliens and human security. No physical evidence for any such base has ever surfaced. The story's documented origin is far stranger than the myth: a real U.S. Air Force disinformation campaign, run through AFOSI, that targeted Albuquerque businessman Paul Bennewitz and helped manufacture a modern UFO legend.
