Conspiracy Theories of the 1940s

Claims that US officials had specific foreknowledge of the Pearl Harbor attack and allowed it to happen to enter World War II.

The 1943 FBI seizure of Nikola Tesla's papers and belongings from his New York hotel room within hours of his death. The seizure is well-documented; what was taken, what was sensitive, and whether technology was subsequently suppressed remains partly contested.

The debate over whether adding fluoride to public water supplies is a safe public health measure to prevent tooth decay, or a form of mass medication with potential health risks that the public cannot opt out of.

Claims that an area of the North Atlantic bounded roughly by Miami, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico experiences an anomalous rate of ship and aircraft disappearances attributable to supernatural forces, extraterrestrials, or unknown natural phenomena. Lloyd's of London (1975) found no anomalous loss rate in the region, and researcher Larry Kusche demonstrated that many celebrated disappearances were misreported, occurred outside the claimed boundaries, or never happened.

US program (1945-1959) that secretly recruited over 1,600 former Nazi scientists, engineers, and technicians — including many with documented war crimes — and brought them to America for military and space programs, circumventing President Truman's anti-Nazi directive.

Adolf Hitler died by suicide in his Führerbunker in Berlin on 30 April 1945. Soviet forces recovered remains; dental records matching Dr. Hugo Blaschke's records for Hitler were confirmed; the Soviet skull cap with a bullet hole was displayed as evidence. A persistent claim holds that Hitler escaped via ratlines to South America — Argentina is most frequently named. FBI files released under FOIA in 2014 reference wartime informant reports of Hitler sightings in Argentina; these are raw intelligence reports, not confirmed findings. The ratlines were real and transported genuine Nazi war criminals including Eichmann and Mengele. Hitler's death in the bunker is confirmed by multiple independent forensic and archival analyses.

Governments have demonstrably conducted weather modification programs. Project Stormfury (1962–1983) attempted hurricane modification; Operation Popeye (1967–1972) used cloud seeding as a military weapon in Vietnam and was later declassified; China operates the world's largest state weather modification program today. These are established historical facts. The leap from confirmed historical programs to claims of ongoing covert weather warfare in 2024–2025 — or that unnamed actors are weaponising weather for geopolitical ends — is not supported by evidence.

The 1947 crash of a high-altitude Project Mogul balloon near Roswell, New Mexico that was briefly described by the US Army as a recovered "flying disc" before being reclassified as a weather balloon — and later, in 1994, as a classified Soviet nuclear-test surveillance balloon.

The theory that the classified US Air Force facility known as Area 51 in Nevada houses recovered extraterrestrial spacecraft and alien remains, and that the government has been reverse-engineering alien technology for decades.

CIA relationships with American journalists and media organizations, running from the early 1950s into the 1970s, are documented by Carl Bernstein's 1977 Rolling Stone investigation and the Church Committee. A single named "Operation Mockingbird" program controlling US media is not documented, and claims of ongoing control today are unsupported. Partially confirmed.

Operation Aerodynamic was a CIA covert programme that funded and directed Ukrainian émigré networks — principally the ZP-UHVR (Foreign Representation of the Ukrainian Supreme Liberation Council) and its associated Prolog Research Corporation in New York — to conduct psychological warfare and propaganda operations against the Soviet Union. The programme ran from 1949 into the 1990s. Key figure Mykola Lebed, a ZP-UHVR leader who received CIA support and US naturalisation, had documented ties to the Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN-B) and a WWII-era record that included collaboration with Nazi occupying forces. Declassified National Security Archive documents and reporting by Eric Lichtblau and Ralph Blumenthal confirmed the programme and Lebed's history. The programme is confirmed; the question of what was concealed about its participants is partially established.
