Reichstag building burns — van der Lubbe arrested

At approximately 9:14 PM on February 27, 1933, fire breaks out in the German Reichstag. Marinus van der Lubbe, a 24-year-old Dutch communist, is found inside the burning building and immediately arrested. Hitler and Göring arrive and publicly blame a Communist conspiracy.

Reichstag Fire Decree suspends civil liberties

President von Hindenburg signs the Reichstag Fire Decree (Verordnung des Reichspräsidenten zum Schutz von Volk und Staat) on February 28, 1933. The decree suspends Article 48 civil-liberty protections including freedom of expression, press, assembly, and inviolability of correspondence. Within days, more than 4,000 Communist Party officials are arrested.

Frankfurt School scholars flee Nazi Germany

Hitler's rise forces Frankfurt School members — many of them Jewish — to emigrate; most relocate to the United States, primarily Columbia University.

Leipzig Trial: van der Lubbe convicted; four Communist defendants acquitted

The Leipzig Trial concludes. Marinus van der Lubbe is convicted on the arson charge and sentenced to death. Four other defendants — KPD Reichstag member Ernst Torgler and three Bulgarian Comintern figures including Georgi Dimitrov — are acquitted for lack of evidence. Dimitrov's defiant cross-examination of Göring becomes internationally notable.

Van der Lubbe executed under retroactive law

Marinus van der Lubbe is executed by guillotine on January 10, 1934. He was executed under the *lex van der Lubbe* — a law passed after the fire that retroactively made arson a capital offense — enabling his execution for a crime that was not capital at the time he allegedly committed it.

Bern Trial declares Protocols a forgery

Swiss judge Walter Meyer declares the Protocols a forgery following expert testimony in a case brought by Swiss Jewish organisations. The ruling is overturned in 1937 on procedural grounds but the forgery finding is never challenged on its merits and is upheld by all subsequent courts and historians.

Wilhelm König proposes an ancient 'galvanic cell'

König, running the Iraq Museum laboratory, publishes his hypothesis (paper titled 'Ein galvanisches Element aus der Partherzeit?') suggesting the assembly was a battery, possibly used to electroplate gold onto silver.

Marvin Pentz Gay Jr. is born in Washington, D.C. His father, Marvin Gay Sr., is a Pentecostal minister with a documented pattern of physical violence against family members. Multiple biographers document childhood abuse.

Heydrich orders Naujocks to plan staged border incidents

Reinhard Heydrich, head of the SD Security Service, orders Alfred Naujocks to plan and execute a series of staged attacks on German border installations to be attributed to Polish forces. The Gleiwitz radio station attack is the centrepiece of the operation.

Gleiwitz attack executed — "Konserve" bodies placed at scene

Naujocks leads the SS team in seizing the Gleiwitz radio station, broadcasting a brief anti-German message in Polish, and leaving the bodies of concentration camp prisoners and Franciszek Honiok — dressed in Polish uniforms — at the scene as staged evidence of Polish aggression.

Hitler cites Polish attacks in Reichstag address; invasion begins

Hitler addresses the Reichstag and the German people, citing Polish attacks on German border installations as the reason for military action already underway. The German invasion of Poland begins at 4:45 a.m. Britain and France declare war on 3 September 1939.
