Some time around 1936, near the village of Khujut Rabu on the outskirts of Baghdad, excavators recovered a small unremarkable clay jar. Inside was a copper cylinder about nine centimeters tall, sealed at the bottom, and inside that an iron rod, the whole assembly held together with asphalt (bitumen). Two years later Wilhelm König, an Austrian painter and archaeologist who ran the laboratory of the National Museum of Iraq, published a short paper asking a provocative question: was this a galvanic cell — a battery — from the Parthian period? They were held by the Iraq Museum until many pieces vanished during the looting that followed the 2003 invasion.
Second, König's physics is not absurd. A copper cylinder and an iron rod are two dissimilar metals. Immerse them in an acidic or alkaline electrolyte — vinegar, wine, grape juice, or brine — and you have exactly the ingredients of a galvanic cell. König estimated it could yield around a volt.
Third, replicas actually work. Engineer Willard Gray built a reconstruction that produced roughly 1.5–2 volts with grape juice. In 2005 the television show MythBusters built ten replica jars, filled them with lemon juice, measured about half a volt each and around 4 volts when wired in series, and used the array to electroplate a small object and to power acupuncture needles. In the 1970s the German Egyptologist Arne Eggebrecht reportedly connected several cells and deposited a thin layer of gold on silver. Stacked together, these points make the honest steelman: here is a genuine ancient object, built from the right materials, that measurably produces current in modern hands. If you stop there, 'ancient battery' sounds reasonable.
What the objects actually are
The assembly is modest: a ceramic pot roughly 14–15 cm tall, a rolled-copper tube about 26 mm across with a crimped, asphalt-sealed bottom, and an iron rod suspended down the center and held by an asphalt stopper at the top. König noted traces of an acidic residue, which battery proponents read as spent electrolyte. Crucially, the copper cylinder does not project out of the asphalt plug in a way that would let you attach a conductor, and the iron rod is likewise capped. In other words, the object as found has no exposed terminals.
What the evidence shows
Here the steelman runs into a wall. 'Could work as a cell' and 'was used as a cell' are different claims, and only the second is the conspiracy claim.
No wiring, no terminals, no linked jars. A battery is useless without a circuit. Nowhere at Khujut Rabu or any comparable site has anyone found wires, conductors, or a set of jars connected in series — the very configuration MythBusters needed to get a usable voltage. As University of Pennsylvania archaeologist William Hafford put it, "We don't find wires, and in the way most of these objects were found, there is no way to attach a contact to the metal core." The asphalt that seals the copper tube would also have to be broken and remade every time you refreshed the electrolyte, which is not how you design a tool.
No electroplated objects anywhere in the ancient world. König's own motivation was electroplating, yet not a single electroplated artifact has ever been recovered from Parthian or Sasanian contexts. Every gilded object from the period that has been analyzed was fire-gilded or mercury-gilded — as Paul Craddock of the British Museum confirmed — not electroplated. David A. Scott, senior scientist at the Getty Conservation Institute, stated flatly that "there is absolutely no evidence for electroplating in this region at the time."
No texts, no context. Antiquity left us abundant writing — recipes, temple inventories, technical manuals — and not one line describes generating or using electric current. König never studied the objects in a well-documented excavation context; the find circumstances were poorly recorded, which is itself a red flag.
A much better fit: storage. Archaeologists at the University of Michigan excavating nearby Seleucia found nearly identical copper tubes that contained the remains of papyrus scrolls, and comparable vessels elsewhere held organic plant matter. The picture assembles cleanly: a scroll wrapped around an iron pin, slipped inside a copper tube, the whole thing sealed in a protective clay jar with asphalt. The 'electrolyte' residue is more naturally explained as decayed organic material. Emmerich Paszthory and others argued the jars were magical objects — protective containers for spells or curses, akin to the incantation bowls found in the same region and later 'witch bottles.' Archaeologist Elizabeth Stone, a specialist in Mesopotamia, summed up the field in 2012: "I don't know anybody who thinks it's a real battery."
