Göbekli Tepe is a genuine 11,600-year-old megalithic site in southeastern Turkey that pushed monumental architecture back to Stone Age hunter-gatherers. Popular writers, above all Graham Hancock, recast it as proof of a lost technologically advanced civilization, a claim mainstream archaeology does not support.

A set of clay jars with copper cylinders and iron rods, found near Baghdad and dated to the Parthian or Sasanian era, are claimed by alternative-history writers to be ancient electric batteries — proof of a lost electrical technology used for electroplating, or even a gift from ancient astronauts. The jars are genuinely old and a jar-plus-two-metals arrangement really can produce a fraction of a volt, and replicas (including a famous MythBusters build) have generated current. But there are no wires, no connectors, no electroplated artifacts, and no textual record of electricity in antiquity. The mainstream archaeological reading — storage vessels for sacred scrolls or protective spells — fits the evidence far better.

Recurring claims — circulating most intensely during Kim Jong-un's extended absence from public view in 2014 and again during a two-week disappearance in 2020 — assert that one or more body doubles routinely substitute for the North Korean leader in public appearances. Evidence cited includes perceived variations in facial features across years (particularly ear-shape analysis and apparent weight-gain/loss cycles), gait changes, and a general argument from the known authoritarian-leader tradition of using doubles for security. South Korean intelligence (NIS) has not confirmed the claim; NK News, Reuters, AP, and BBC cover the gaps in what can be verified. The theory is treated here as plausible-but-unverifiable speculation.

On 24 November 1971, a man using the alias "Dan Cooper" hijacked Northwest Orient Flight 305, extorted $200,000 in ransom, and parachuted from the aircraft over the Washington-Oregon wilderness, never to be identified. The FBI investigated more than 1,000 suspects over 45 years before formally suspending the investigation in 2016. In 2011, a citizen-science analysis of a partial ransom-bill find and particles on Cooper's abandoned tie produced new leads that also proved inconclusive.

The ancient Library of Alexandria — among history's most famous libraries — has been claimed to have been destroyed variously by Julius Caesar (48 BC), Theophilus of Alexandria (391 AD), Amr ibn al-As during Arab conquest (642 AD), or to have declined gradually. Each attribution carries cultural and political weight.

The biblical Ark of the Covenant — a gold-covered wooden chest described in Exodus containing the Ten Commandments — has been claimed to be located variously in Ethiopia (Axum), the Vatican, beneath the Temple Mount, or hidden by the Knights Templar.

The theory that an advanced ancient civilization, described by Plato as Atlantis, actually existed and was destroyed by a catastrophe, with its knowledge suppressed or lost to history.
