MKUltra: The CIA Mind Control Program
A CIA research program, approved in 1953 and run mainly through the mid-1960s, that funded experiments with LSD, hypnosis, sensory deprivation and other ways of influencing behavior, some on people who did not know they were being tested. Most of its files were destroyed in 1973; a surviving cache came to light in 1977.

Marvin Gay Sr. shot his son Marvin Gaye on 1 April 1984, the day before Marvin's 45th birthday. Gay Sr. was arrested, charged with first-degree murder, and subsequently diagnosed with a brain tumour that affected his behaviour; the charge was reduced to voluntary manslaughter and he received a suspended sentence. The conspiracy claim — that Gay Sr. was a CIA-programmed or mind-controlled asset directed to kill his son — has no evidentiary basis and contradicts decades of documented domestic violence, psychiatric findings, and medical records.

On 18 November 1978, 918 people died in Guyana, most of them members of the Peoples Temple at its agricultural commune in Jonestown. Jim Jones ordered mass ingestion of cyanide-laced punch; Congressman Leo Ryan and four others were murdered at the nearby airstrip. The claim that Jones was a CIA asset or that Jonestown was an MKULTRA-style CIA experiment is unsubstantiated: a 1980 House Intelligence Committee investigation found no evidence of any CIA connection with Jones or the Temple, although it published no report and the CIA's own records on the Temple remain largely withheld. Separately, survivor accounts and the Guyanese pathologist's reports indicate that many of the dead, including children, did not die by free choice, though how many of the adults were compelled is disputed.

EgyptAir Flight 990, a Boeing 767-300ER operating LAX-CAI via JFK, plunged into the Atlantic Ocean 60 miles south of Nantucket on 31 October 1999, killing all 217 people on board. The NTSB's 2002 final report gave the probable cause as the relief first officer's flight control inputs and found no mechanical failure that explained the dive, but it did not determine why he made them and reached no conclusion on intent or motivation. The first officer, Gameel Al-Batouti, was alone at the controls when the dive began and said 'Tawakkalt ala Allah' (I rely on God) eleven times before and during it. Egypt's ECAA disputed the finding, arguing that malfunctions in the right elevator's power control actuators may have caused the dive. The dispute has never been formally resolved.
