Is it true: Jonestown / Peoples Temple: CIA mind-control vs coerced mass death (1978)?
There's no solid evidence for it.
The claim that Jim Jones was a CIA asset, or that Jonestown was an MKULTRA-style CIA experiment, has not been substantiated. The House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence investigated in 1980 and wrote that it found "no evidence at all" that the CIA knew of the tragedy beforehand or had any connection with Jones or the Peoples Temple. It published no report, and the CIA's own records on the Temple remain heavily redacted or withheld, so the claim is unproven rather than disproven. The separate point, that many of the dead were coerced or killed rather than dying by choice, is well documented for the children and others who had no choice; how many able-bodied adults were compelled is disputed.
The claim
Jim Jones was a CIA asset or mind-control subject, and Jonestown was a CIA-directed, MKULTRA-style experiment, so the 18 November 1978 deaths were the product of an intelligence operation rather than the acts of an autonomous cult leader. This is distinct from the separate, documented question of how many of the dead were coerced or killed rather than dying by choice.
