Fact check

Is it true: XXXTentacion 2018: rival-label hit vs street robbery?

Debunked95% confidence

No — this has been debunked.

Three men — Michael Boatwright (identified by prosecutors as the shooter), Dedrick Williams, and Trayvon Newsome — were convicted of first-degree murder and armed robbery by a jury on 20 March 2023 and sentenced to life without parole on 6 April 2023; a fourth man, Robert Allen, pleaded guilty in August 2022 to second-degree murder and testified for the prosecution. Prosecutors' account was a robbery of the $50,000 in cash XXXTentacion had just withdrawn from a bank. No evidence of rival-label involvement was produced at trial or has emerged since, and no conviction has been reported overturned (Boatwright's were affirmed on appeal in 2025). The conviction record contradicts the claim.

The claim

The 2018 killing of rapper XXXTentacion (Jahseh Onfroy) was a hit ordered or arranged by a rival record label or other music-industry figure, rather than the street robbery for which three men were convicted at trial and a fourth pleaded guilty.
