Is it true: The Voting Pencil Fraud Myth?
No — this has been debunked.
The factual premise is partly true - UK polling stations do supply pencils by tradition, and voters are free to use their own pen - but the fraud conclusion is unsupported. Ballots are sealed and counted the same night under the scrutiny of candidates' agents and accredited observers, mass erasure would be immediately detectable, and no evidence of pencil-enabled vote-switching has ever been found. Pencils are used because ink can smudge, dry out or transfer across a folded ballot, and because a pen mark can be crossed out just as easily as a pencil mark can be rubbed out. Election authorities in the UK, Canada, Australia and the US have all rejected the claim.

Polling stations deliberately provide only pencils so that officials, the security services (MI5), or the 'establishment' can erase voters' marks after the polls close and change the outcome of the election; therefore voters should bring their own pen to protect their vote.
