Is it true: Operation Mockingbird: CIA Media Influence?
Partly — it's more complicated than the claim suggests.
The underlying activities, CIA cultivation of American journalists and media executives during the Cold War, are documented by Carl Bernstein's 1977 reporting from CIA files and by the Church Committee. A single "Operation Mockingbird" media network is not: the name traces to Deborah Davis's 1979 book, the only "Mockingbird" we have found in the declassified record is a narrow 1963 wiretap of two columnists, and claims of comprehensive ongoing media control are not supported by primary sources.
