Is it true: Manson Family / Helter Skelter race-war-trigger plan (1969)?

Partly — it's more complicated than the claim suggests.

The claim has two parts. That Manson ordered the Tate and LaBianca killings is confirmed: a Los Angeles jury convicted him on 25 January 1971 of seven counts of first-degree murder and one of conspiracy to commit murder, and his co-defendants were convicted too (Watson separately, in October 1971). That he did so to start a race war is the prosecution's account of motive. It rests on testimony from former Family members about what Manson taught and on Linda Kasabian's testimony that on the evening of 8 August 1969 he told her, "Now is the time for Helter Skelter". In 1976 the California Court of Appeal wrote: "Circumstantial evidence proves the overriding purpose of appellants and their coindictees—the fomentation of the race war Manson characterized as Helter-Skelter." A guilty verdict does not itself record a motive, though; Manson denied responsibility, and other observers, including Bobby Beausoleil, have favoured a copycat account tied to the Hinman murder; Joe Berlinger, director of a Netflix documentary series released in August 2026, says the race war was "a false idea" (his interpretation, not a court finding).
