Fact check

Is it true: Atlantis: The Lost Civilization?

Debunked90% confidence

No — this has been debunked.

Atlantis as Plato described it was not a real civilization. It appears only in Plato's Timaeus and Critias, scholars treat it as his invention, and the geology of the Atlantic leaves no basis for an island "larger than Libya and Asia put together" having sunk there in a day and night. No proposed site has produced accepted archaeological evidence of such a civilization, and archaeologists reject the suggestion that any is being suppressed. The eruption of Thera has been suggested as a real-world inspiration, but that link is speculative and the dates and setting differ from Plato's account.
